After reading the author’s A New Dawn, I was very eager to read this book! Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations, but I believe it was a case of it’s not the book/author, it’s me.
I really enjoyed the exploration of character shift, from Obi-Wan to Ben, but hated the fact that he was absent for most of the book. Sure, reading his private meditations was a nice addition, but it never really lead to anything. He was trying to contact his old master, and it was pretty much a one way conversation. That got old, very fast! The narrative focused a lot on the settlers, and I found them very boring! I felt as though all the other characters were expendable and only there as plot devices for Obi-Wan’s transformation. I really just wanted to see more of the character I had gotten the book for! Personally, I agree with another reviewer who thought that this would have worked much better if it was told exclusively in the first person format from the perspective of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read, especially seeing Star Wars in a Western light, seeing as how I don’t enjoy Westerns, but I thought it could have been much better.

Crochet Lends Enchantment to the Review 
Sorry to hear it didn’t work as well for you. For what it’s worth, the meditations do lead somewhere. It’s just that it takes years down the road. This shows him essentially starting all over again from scratch, having to “unlearn what he has learned.” And that really goes for all points. The other characters are there so we can see how people perceive him. It’s a means of helping the audience to divorce ourselves from what we expect to see after so many years of prequel era Kenobi.

And prequel era Kenobi was who I had in my head! I had a hard time getting my head around some of the changes in him, simply because I was so enamored of prequel era/Clone Wars Kenobi. Since I wouldn’t really let that go, I think it affected how much I enjoyed this story.

That’s the point exactly. Kenobi had to learn to let go, and so too does the audience. That’s where the transformation truly begins.
